Essay Writing Tips | University

It's that time of the year again. Term 2 is a busy one for me. Not only are all my assessed essays in for before or just after the easter break, but having to prepare for seminars on top - it's all just a mess!

But fear not, put down that Red Bull, stop planning your all nighters and listen up, because university shouldn't have to be about stressing yourself stupid the night before a deadline!

1. Start Early
I know, I know. Easier said than done right? Starting early not only means less stress, but you don't all have to scramble for library books a few weeks before the deadline. Look at the questions and start your research. It really will help if you have multiple deadlines.

2. Plan Plan Plan
I definitely spend a little too long on a plan, making use of all my stationery to make a large spider diagram of all the points I want to make. So you don't need to do this, but going in with a clear plan really does make it easier to write.

3. Snack up!
Snacks, yes please! I am currently still making my way through my Christmas chocolate, but this probably isn't the best thing to eat whilst essay writing. Make sure you have a glass of water and some fruit, bananas are always my favourite. Stay hydrated and focussed!

4. Are you answering the question?
Take a step back, or maybe get a friend to read it. Make sure you are not just writing down all the knowledge that you think is relevant to the question. Constantly make sure you are making reference to it for you to come to a conclusion. Seems pretty simple, but again, it is easier said than done!

5. Sleep!
Staying up late for me is the worst thing I could do. I do not function well on little sleep. If it isn't going the way that it should or you are feeling uninspired, give up for the night and look back the next day. It could give you a fresh perspective on things.

6. Know your deadlines
Know exactly when they are and how to hand it in, whether it is online or hard copy. Check your universities guidelines on presentation so you don't have a panic the morning before the deadline

7. Relax
Essay period is stressful, yes. But put in the hard work you'll get results. Make sure you relax a little, make sure to have some well deserved 'me time'.

Good luck everyone, we can get through this!

  1. I hate writing essays - luckily my course doesn't involve too many of them. Planning and preparation are definitely the keys to success though - not having a plan is what panics me the most when it comes to essays!
I would also say write in a logical order. I often start mine somewhere in the middle, jump to the conclusion, back to the introduction and then fill in the gaps. Not surprisingly, I often have to spend the last couple of days trying to make it all sound fluent rather than patchy!
Oh, and reference as you go. Nothing worse than having to sort all the references out at the end!
